Structural Monitoring Systems
Real-Time Measurement of Structural Movement
Overview
Structural health monitoring systems provide continuous or periodic measurement of structural behaviour — tilt, displacement, crack movement, strain, vibration, and settlement — detecting changes before they become critical.
SiteOps designs and installs monitoring systems including digital tiltmeters for wall movement, crack gauges for crack width tracking, strain gauges for stress measurement, and vibration sensors for dynamic response.
Modern monitoring systems transmit data wirelessly to cloud platforms, enabling remote access and automated alerts when measurements exceed pre-defined thresholds. SiteOps configures alert thresholds based on structural analysis for each installation.
Monitoring provides a justified and cost-effective alternative to immediate remediation where structural analysis supports it — the "Monitor" tier of the Make Safe and Monitor hierarchy.
Applications
Wall & Foundation Tilt
Continuous measurement detecting progressive lean or differential settlement.
Crack Width Monitoring
Distinguishing seasonal thermal movement from progressive structural cracking.
Settlement Monitoring
Precision level monitoring of foundation settlement and floor deflection.
Strain & Load Monitoring
Measuring strain in steel beams, concrete columns, and post-tensioning tendons.
Vibration Monitoring
Recording vibration from construction, traffic, or seismic events.

FAQ
Common questions
When is monitoring recommended instead of repair?+
When analysis indicates no immediate safety risk but uncertainty exists about whether the condition is stable or progressive.
How long does monitoring run?+
Crack monitoring requires at least 12 months for one seasonal cycle. Long-term heritage monitoring may run indefinitely.
