Ferroscan
Electromagnetic Reinforcement Detection and Cover Depth Measurement
Overview
Ferroscan is an electromagnetic pulse induction technology that detects steel reinforcement within concrete and measures the depth of concrete cover. SiteOps uses Ferroscan as a complementary technology to GPR — while GPR provides broader subsurface imaging, Ferroscan provides more precise cover depth measurements and can estimate bar diameter.
Cover depth is a critical structural parameter determining the time for chloride penetration or carbonation to reach reinforcement and initiate corrosion. Accurate cover depth measurement is essential for durability modelling and residual life assessment.
The technology generates a pulsed electromagnetic field that induces eddy currents in nearby ferromagnetic materials. Measurements are processed to produce a 2D reinforcement map showing bar positions, spacing, and cover depth.
Ferroscan is effective for cover depths up to approximately 80mm and bar diameters from 6mm to 36mm. For deeper reinforcement, GPR is the preferred technology.

FAQ
Common questions
How does Ferroscan differ from GPR?+
Ferroscan uses electromagnetic induction for precise cover depth (up to 80mm). GPR uses radar for broader imaging at greater depths but with less precise cover measurement. SiteOps typically uses both in combination.
Can Ferroscan detect non-ferrous materials?+
No — Ferroscan detects ferromagnetic materials only. For non-ferrous detection, GPR is required.
